Metro Transit, 46th Street Bus Rapid Transitway
Minneapolis, MN
first BRT (bus rapid transit) station in Minnesota
buses run every 15 minutes from station
330 passengers are expected to use it every day
Minnesota's first bus rapid transit station opened in December 2010. The two-story station allows buses to pick up and drop off passengers without leaving the freeway, making bus transportation faster and more reliable. RSP designed the glass-enclosed station as a curve to suggest movement and elegance. While beautiful, the design is also pratical and steeped in safety. The all glass structure provides clear way finding and passive security. It also contrasts nicely against the surrounding concrete and asphalt. The design also accentuates how buses move through the station. Each bus must crossover under the bridge so passengers can board and debark oppostive traffic flow.
Sustainable design features include geothermal technology for heating and cooling and LED lighting turned on by motion sensors.
