Binghamton Army Reserve Center
Binghamton, NY
one of two pilot projects to reduce energy consumption by 50%
designed for LEED Platinum certification
With hundreds of facilities throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Army Reserve has initiated an energy reduction pilot program with a goal of reducing energy consumption in all U.S. Army facilities by 50%. RSP is one of two firms selected to review how the Army delivers projects, explore ways to reduce energy consumption and recommend sustainable design strategies that could result in LEED Platinum certification. RSP was assigned a training center facility in Binghamton, NY. A thorough site and building analysis uncovered several “aha” moments for the Army. Traditional building strategies were found to be inefficient. RSP recommended the Army view the site and facility as a system, one in which the building is interdependent on the site and vice versa. Innovative strategies are being employed to achieve LEED Platinum and net zero. Through the process, RSP proved the value of sustainable design to the Army and demonstrated how cost effective it can be – the sustainable strategies outlined in the Binghamton project will pay for themselves within 24 years whereas the building is designed to last 50.
