Korgas Port International Exhibition Center
XinJiang, China
173,992 square meters
three stories
Occupying one of the most significant new urban developments on the Western China border, the architecture calls for a place making form that responds to the Korgas climate and creates a strong image. The building's forms emerge from the landscape as the culmination of a winding linear landscape gesture that bisects the entire development. The glass of the curved southern face addresses the formal plaza that connects the project back to the main government building to the south. The building is conceived as a centre for cultural unification and economic development with over 250,000 square meters of exhibition space and 10,000 square meters of convention space.
Designed for maximum flexibility to accommodate the program’s phasing, the structure is designed with room for further development in the underground levels and in the highest levels of the building while still meeting height restrictions.
The Korgas climate poses significant challenges to keep the building cool during the long dry summer and appropriately heated during the humid cold winter. The roof garden provides a great insulation to cool the building and the orientation of the sun in winter coming into the space through the north facing façade will help with heating the building.
